an economy without women

Just saw an article in the Brooklyn Rail referencing the continuing scarcity of women in art exhibitions, galleries, museums, collections, major textbooks, etc. And I quote:

The current statistics of gallery shows have remained around 20 percent women to 80 percent men, even in recent years.1 (Only 27 women are represented in the current edition of H.W. Janson’s “classic text” History of Art, up from zero in the 1980’s.2)


The Janson figure is by far the worse of the two since the book contains some 1400 illustrations, amounting to a 1.9% representation for women.

Hard to have strong engagement with the economy of art when you’re not present in the economy itself.
